Arise, Sir Simon…
Simon Hughes, the former Justice Minister and MP for Bermondsey in central London from 1983 to 2015, has been knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. The award is for public and political service.
Sir Hughes was bounced out of the closet by the tabloids during his 2006 bid for the leadership of the Liberal Democrats, a contest in which he came third.
In 2010 he was re-elected to Parliament, the only openly bisexual candidate to win a seat in that year’s General Election, and found himself in government after 27 years on the opposition benches. Three years later he stood down as deputy leader of his party to take up a ministerial post.
