HPV Vaccine for bi men

The NHS in Wales will begin to offer the HPV vaccine to bisexual and gay men, it was announced today.

A vaccination programme began in 2008 for young women to be immunised against the human papilloma virus, which can cause various kinds of cancer.

For several years campaigners have argued that this should be extended to bi and gay men, and indeed that it should be a general vaccination programme rather than gender based – reflecting that sexual health is an issue for everyone rather than just women.

Men under 45 who have sex with men will now be targeted through GUM clinics.

The change was promised in the Conservative Party’s 2015 General Election manifesto, but there is not as yet movement on an equivalent change in England.
