Congratulations BCN editor Jen Yockney who carried the Volunteer Of The Year award away at last night’s LGBT Heroes ceremony.
It’s the first time in the five years of the awards that a bi community organisation or individual activist has taken the prize, despite several making the shortlists over that time.
Her comment after the event was, “I was so sure that Will Forshaw (from Outdoorlads) was going to win that my name being read out took a few seconds to click. I’m pretty sure the ‘Oh [rudeword], it’s me‘ that went through my mind was out loud!
“It’s fabulous to have had the support of so many people in the public voting – as well as whoever it was that nominated me for the shortlist in the first place. Thank you, all.”
Jen was one of many trans winners on the night. In other categories the trans festival Sparkle cleaned up with organiser Beckie Fox taking the Community Champion award and the festival itself taking Community Group/Organisation of the Year. Trans actress Kate O’Donnell took the Role Model award.
The police had a good night too, with Police With Pride taking the Public Sector Partner award and Andrew Rhodes, Deputy Chief Constable of Lancashire force winning the Ally Award.
