BBC unveils its Versailles

After lots of teasing publicity, tonight BBC2 starts showing Versailles, a French-produced drama telling stories of the court of King Louis XIV. We will meet “historical and fictional characters – flamboyant nobles, beautiful courtesans and humble servants – guide us through this intoxicating world of secrets, betrayals, love and war.”

Beyond which we’re promised cross-dressing and people having “gay sex”, which probably means the King’s arguably-bisexual Philippe. Let’s see!

Monday night’s The Real Versailles (iplayer here) set the scene.  The show proper kicks off tonight at 9.30 on BBC2.
