Austria joins the marriage club

Austria will be legalising same-sex marriage by the end of this year following a supreme court ruling yesterday.

The court has declared that civil partnerships and marriage, the current “separate and not equal” arrangement in the country, cannot be maintained as they are clearly discriminatory, and decreed the law must change by the start of 2018.

The move follows neighbouring Germany which introduced same-sex marriage two months ago, as we reported here, and means Austria is likely to deliver on marriage ahead of Australia whose big referendum win for same-sex marriage is now being turned into legislation.
