True Blood’s own bi fest
Evan Rachel Wood comes out as bisexual
Recently, Evan Rachel Wood joined the number of celebrities unafraid to talk about their sexuality, coming out as bisexual in an interview with Esquire magazine.
The 23 year old True Blood star told Esquire that “I’m up for anything. Meet a nice guy, meet a nice girl.”
Until August last year, Evan dated Goth-rocker Marilyn Manson. But their relationship was always on-off and they finally split. They may have seemed like an unlikely match, as the well grounded Evan is known to prefer a quiet life rather than a Hollywood party lifestyle. But she has always insisted they were close, and explains her attraction to him saying “Guys, girls … I’m into androgyny in general.”
The interview shows the star proud to admit she dates women as well as men, perhaps buoyed on by the warm reception co-star Anna Paquin received when she came out as bisexual last April for the True Colours Fund’s Give a Damn campaign.
Evan has become one of Hollywood’s most up and coming talents with an extensive filmography already, despite her young age. She is well known for her roles in The Wrestler, Thirteen and The Missing and has recently stunned viewers with her portrayal of glamorous bisexual vampire queen Sophie-Anne Leclerq in True Blood. But, in contrast to the colder than ice facade of her true blood character, Evan reveals she’s actually a lot softer in real life. “Yeah, I’m kind of like the guy when it comes to girls. I’m the dominant one”, she says. “I’m opening the doors, I’m buying dinner. Yeah, I’m romantic.”
In the Esquire interview, Wood is not afraid to show a side of her that’s a little different. She reveals that she has nine tattoos although she won’t let on what the ninth – hidden on the inside of her lip, reveals. She also admits to having picked her funeral song (Pink Floyd’s Shine On You Crazy Diamond) and she wants her ashes to be dispersed in various places, including the site of her father’s theatre in Raleigh Luxembourg Gardens in Paris.
Wood has always been comfortable portraying same-sex relationships on screen, playing a lesbian in several roles, including Once and Again, The Wrestler and her current role as a bisexual vampire queen on True Blood, albeit one who “hasn’t enjoyed sex with men since the Eisenhower administration”. Those who have followed her career may also remember her making out with Nikki Read in the film Thirteen. Her latest role in period drama Mildred Pierce sees her in a much more adult acting role than we are used to, and has her take on her first fully nude scene.
What is a shame about Evan coming out is the reaction of some news sources and websites to the interview. There are certainly many scathing takes on her revelation to be found, dismissing her bisexuality as following the trend or trying to be “cool” or dismissing her as a hedonist. It is a pity that a star cannot say that they fancy more than one gender without it instantly being seen as a publicity stunt – which has been known, of course, but is not something that so many gay stars have to weather. Let’s hope that now that Evan has been open about her bisexuality she’ll find that nice guy- or girl- she’s looking for.
