Grindr data leaks
With attention on personal data privacy and misuse following the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Buzzfeed yesterday published an expose on bi and gay men’s dating app Grindr.
They believe Grindr has been sharing data rather too carelessly with other organisations – stating, “HIV information is sent together with users’ GPS data, phone ID, and email”.
Reverse engineering phone IDs and GPS data is probably beyond most of us, but could be used to locate grindr users in places less friendly to queers than most of the UK. And if your email address is [email protected] that is still fairly anonymous, but for the many people whose email details look more like [email protected], it’s a lot more readily identifying.
Some of the data was shared as plain text without encryption.
